Choosing Your Wedding Photographer

Your wedding day is the happiest day of your life! How many times have you heard people say that? With this in mind, you need to entrust your special day to a professional photographer. After all, your images will be the most important keepsake for years to come.

Here are some of the things you may want to consider:-

How do you choose the right photographer for your day, and where do you find them?

Initially, you could ‘surf the net’ for photographers that cover your area - good websites will show many examples of work, and give you a taster of their particular style.

You could look through bridal magazines, or visit locally held wedding fayres where, in addition to meeting your possible photographer, you can always meet other wedding service providers.

Alternatively, just get recommendations from friends who have recently got married themselves – if you liked their photographs, ask who took them!

You’ve shortlisted a few photographers, what next?

- Check that they are still available on your chosen date. Most good photographers will be booked well in advance.

- Are they qualified professionals? Although not always necessary, do they hold professional qualifications with organisations such as the BIPP, MPA, RPS (Professional photographic bodies that assess the work of professional photographers for competence)?

- Are they insured? All good wedding photographers should have Public Liability Insurance; if in doubt ask!

- Make an appointment to meet your photographer in person and see some of their work. You may well have seen and liked their style online, but it’s paramount that you feel comfortable with them too as they will be spending the whole day with you. A good wedding photographer will make everyone feel relaxed, which in turn, produces natural, happy photographs. I have a real passion for my work, and most photographers are the same – always seeking the creative element to the day!

- Ask to see ‘complete’ weddings. This will give you an indication of what their style consists of, rather than just seeing selected prints of the photographer’s best work from many different weddings.

- Do you like the modern ‘contemporary’ style of photography, or the more traditional approach? Perhaps you just want mainly ‘reportage’ with hardly any ‘posed’ shots. These are all things that are personal to you that will need to be discussed with your photographer.
